In a strip mall on Sunset, to the right of El Cochinito, is this place which seems like it would be somewhat high-falutin' and fit in perfectly among the shops on Larchmont or Melrose. However, it's humble, family-owned, and concerned about good recipes with fresh ingredients. It's light and airy inside, yet cozy.
Order a cold Aqua Fresca to drink while you await your meal. I usually get either the Burritas (burritas, not burritos: Sonora-style, with carnitas, rice and beans, covered with an ancho/guajillo chile salsa roja). The mole enchiladas are also good, as is the Tampiquena (grilled steak with queso panela, roasted poblano chiles, and a pair of cheese enchiladas because, you know, that's not enough). They also have plenty of veggie options.
We've yet to try the breakfasts, so we'll have to wander down there one of these Saturday mornings to see what's what.
It's cash-only and closed on Sundays, but the parking lot is usually open and you can bring your own wine with no corkage fee.
